The Early Life of Kedarnath Bhattacharya

Kumar Sanu was born as Kedarnath Bhattacharya in Kolkata, West Bengal. Music was always present in his home—his father was a classical musician and music teacher. Being the youngest among five siblings, Sanu grew up watching his father teach music to students at home.

He recalls,
“My father was my first teacher. Watching him teach every day, I slowly became attached to music.”

Though he started studying for a B.Com degree, his passion for music pulled him away. In his early years, he used to sing in hotels and restaurants in Kolkata to earn a living. But deep inside, he dreamt of something bigger — becoming a playback singer in Mumbai.

Struggles Before Mumbai

Before moving to Mumbai, Sanu tried to establish himself in the Bengali music industry. He would record demo cassettes of his songs and send them to various music directors. But opportunities were rare, and disappointments were frequent.

This pushed him toward a bold decision —
He had to go to Mumbai if he really wanted to make his dream come true.

With determination and hope, he borrowed Rs. 1100 from his elder brother, bought a train ticket, and headed toward the city of dreams.

First Break: Singing in a Mumbai Hotel

When Sanu returned to Mumbai for the second time, things changed quickly. Within just six days, he landed a singing job at a local guest house.

He shares the story proudly:

“One Sunday, I went to the Aradhana Guest House and requested the owner to give me a chance. I sang ‘Hungama Kyun Hai Barpa’, and he immediately hired me.”

That same day, he received a tip of Rs. 14,000, a huge amount at the time.

This job helped him survive in the city, but his real dream remained the same — Bollywood playback singing.

A Young Singer Who Idolized Kishore Kumar

Like many aspiring artists, Kumar Sanu had an idol — the legendary Kishore Kumar.

He says,
“I followed Kishore da closely. He was my inspiration.”

But he also understood a crucial truth:
If he sang exactly like Kishore Kumar, he would remain just another imitation artist.

So he slowly began creating his own style — blending Kishore Kumar’s influence with his own soulful touch. This transformation became the foundation of the Kumar Sanu we know today.

The Turning Point: Aashiqui

The breakthrough came when he got the opportunity to sing for the film Aashiqui. With every song becoming a hit, Kumar Sanu’s voice suddenly became the heartbeat of the nation.

He says,
“In my songs, you will hear a little of Kishore da, but you will also hear Kumar Sanu.”

Aashiqui not only made him a household name but also brought a fresh voice into the Bollywood music industry. It was a turning point — and the beginning of an era dominated by his melodies.

The Influence of Gulshan Kumar

Kumar Sanu credits much of his success to Gulshan Kumar, the founder of T-Series.

Remembering him, Sanu says:
“Gulshan ji taught the music industry to value itself — singers, composers, and lyricists. He paid artists fairly and demanded fair payment in return.”

One of the biggest gifts Gulshan Kumar gave him was the song “Dheere Dheere Se Meri Zindagi Mein Aana” — a track that cemented Kumar Sanu’s place in Bollywood forever.

Aashiqui: The Triumph

When Aashiqui released, Sanu went to watch it at Mumbai’s iconic Chandan Theatre. The audience response shocked him.

He recalls,
“People were throwing money at the screen for each song. And after the film ended, everyone was talking about my voice.”

That was the moment he realized how deeply his songs had touched millions of hearts.
